The International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (ISCN) is the central reference for describing the human chromosome complement. The new edition, ISCN 2013, has recently been published, representing a thorough revision of the 2009 edition. The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the nomenclature changes in particular chapters of the ISCN 2013 issue compared to the previous ISCN 2009 issue. Guidelines and recommendations are intended for cytogeneticists to assist in the transition in using this updated nomenclature for describing the cytogenetic and molecular cytogenetic fi ndings.
