Anemia in children hospitalized at Department of pediatrics, Split University Hospital Center 2006-2010

The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the prevalence of particular types of anemia in children hospitalized at Department of Pediatrics, Split University Hospital Center, from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2010. The prevalence of anemia was assessed according to age groups and severity of anemia. Data on all patients hospitalized during the study period were analyzed. Out of 16 494 hospitalized patients, 480 were diagnosed with anemia. There were 234 (48.7%) male and 246 (51.2%) female children. Sideropenic anemia was most common, found in 418 (87%) children, followed by hyporegenerative anemia in 39 (8.1%) and hemolytic anemia in 23 (4.7%) patients. There was no statistically significant sex difference in the prevalence of particular types of anemia among male and female children. Anemia usually was of low severity and associated with respiratory infections.
