Abstract

Primary nocturnal enuresis is a common disorder in childhood. The etiology is multifactorial with a strong genetic predisposition. Most common causes are nocturnal polyuria, decreased functional capacity of the bladder and disorder of arousal from sleep. Recent studies show that psychological changes are not the cause, but the consequence of nocturnal enuresis. Given the physiological maturation and causes, today is advised active treatment of nocturnal enuresis after the age of fi ve. This paper summarizes the current knowledge about the etiology of primary nocturnal enuresis in children, as well as diagnostics and current therapeutic approaches.
