Jedan od glavnih ciljeva Hrvatskog društva za humanu genetiku (HDHG) je unaprijeđenje kvalitete preventivnih metoda, dijagnostike i liječenja genetskih bolesti. Visoki standard kliničke prakse u ovom području može se postići jedino ukoliko su sve navedene odrednice pra- ćene genetskim savjetovanjem koje će, kako sa stručnog tako i sa etičkog stajališ ta, zadovoljiti visoke kriterije koji danas postoje u medicinskoj genetici. Hrvatsko društvo za humanu genetiku HLZ-a stoga donosi smjernice kojima je namjera regulirati proces genetskog savjetovanja u Hrvatskoj i uskladiti ga sa europskom praksom.
